More About Dave Winfield…
Dave is currently a management consultant, Advisor to the Executive Director of the Major League Baseball Players Association in New York. Previously, he worked as a studio analyst for ESPN Baseball Tonight, ESPN News and SportsCenter; a host of the national Baseball Music Project; a member of the board of the San Diego Padres Professional Baseball organization; an Executive Vice President/Senior Advisor for the Padres club. Dave was a board member of both the Morehouse School of Medicine and Hackensack Medical Center for a decade. He has been a successful quick service food franchisee. He also has been an ambassador for the Ritz Carlton Destination Clubs.
The Winfield Awards were started in 1977, recognizing students for their academics, sports and community service. More than 400 kids have been recognized since 1977. He is one of the first professional athletes with his own nonprofit foundation.
He is on the board of MLB-MLBPA Youth Development Foundation which provides grants to youth baseball and softball programs nationwide. He launched dozens of programs through the Winfield Foundation. During his years as a player, he launched the critically acclaimed Substance Abuse Prevention Campaign, Turn it Around.
Dave was one of the first professional athletes to create a charitable foundation—and inspired many other athletes to do the same. For over 20 years, the Winfield Foundation provided healthcare services, nutritional counseling, scholarships and computer literacy programs to deserving high school students, holiday dinners to families in need, and community outreach programs in and beyond the six Major League cities he called home.
Additionally, charitable missions abroad include a trip to the West Africa with former President Jimmy Carter and the Carter Center in Atlanta, and met with Senegal President John Kofour, discussed eradicating various waterborne diseases.
These diverse activities over the years have earned him an Honorary Doctorate degree from Syracuse University, and others from Concordia University, St. Paul, MN. and Thomas Jefferson School of Law, San Diego, CA
He’s arranged a speaking tour for needed support of College Baseball Programs including Utah, Minnesota, Georgetown, University of Virginia and others.
Dave has done extensive voice over work, campaigns and commercials for documentaries such as “Pride & Perseverance” (the Negro Leagues), and many corporate and Public Service commercials, i.e. New York Daily News, WIX.com, ASK.com Breast Cancer Awareness, and AMGEN Multiple Myeloma Cancer Campaign (Myelomaexplained.com), MLB-MLBPA COVID vaccinations, etc.
Winfield has written, developed and executed various educational (short) videos and seminars including, “Equality and Justice for All”, Baseball Essentials, Padres Friar Fit Campaign, Diversity, Inclusion & Equity Program & T.O.P. Territory Optimization Plan, and the MLBPA 50th Anniversary Campaign and Activities
His charitable work has earned him numerous honors, including the YMCA Brian Piccolo Award for Humanitarian Service, the first Branch Rickey Community Service Award, American League Joe Cronin Award, Josh Gibson Leadership Award and Major League Baseball’s Roberto Clemente Award, and was selected as one of America’s 10 Outstanding Young Men.
Winfield has maintained his personal activities and been speaking to organizations for well over 40 years. He resides in Bel Air, California with his wife Tonya.
